I apply a growth mindset to both my personal and professional life. Effort and persistence are vital to my progression and they take form in constantly learning new things and pushing my boundaries. Did I know what a fully-managed noSQL database was when I started my full time job marketing said database? Absolutely not. But I had the desire and grit to embark on the challenge. Product Marketing at MongoDB allowed me the opportunity for so much growth in that I had to become the subject matter expert on our most technical product and stay constantly up to date with the inter-workings of the database and the cloud industry. The same can be said for a Product Managers, as they act as the owner for their own products and features and the technical challenges are just as frequent and impactful as they would be to a Product Marketing Manager.
Meetings, meetings, meetings. Staying connecting with other teams and maintaining transparency in my work is pivotal to shared success. It's one of the most time consuming parts of the job, but it's also the most exciting. Interacting with other teams is often where the magic happens — where we brainstorm, strategize, and connect. In my experience as a Product Marketing Manager working in partnership with Product Management, we interact with the same stakeholders. We are both in constant communication with our Engineering, Design, Research, Technical Documentarian, and Data Science counterparts. We both are invested in the same goal, but our methodology in achieving that goal differs.
One of core highlights of being a Product Marketing Manager is when given the creative freedom to craft compelling content. At MongoDB, the content was inherently technical, which only made it more engaging to both myself and our developer audience. In working with Product Managers, I have been the reviewer in their constant cycle of product descriptions, specs, scopes, experimentation overviews, etc. Product Marketing and Product Management rely heavily on our ability to persuade with both data and the written word.
